In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, residents of New Jersey are struggling to have their basic needs met. The worst natural disaster in the state?s history has left its citizens reeling; with millions without power, homes damaged or lost, and families forced to seek refuge in shelters. But the men and women of the New Jersey National Guard are coming through for these afflicted residents, aiding in relief efforts by fellow New Jersey neighbors to help residents as they struggle to stay warm in shelters.

The National Guard provided assistance to the GI Go Fund, a nonprofit organization that helps veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, as the organization was providing relief to people in need following the storm. The Guard troops provided thousands of blankets to the GI Go Fund, who then provided them to people staying in shelters in the cities of Newark and Bayonne, NJ.

Members of the Somerset Armory worked together to store the thousands of blankets into the GI Go Fund?s truck, thanks to the assistance of Sergeant First Class Coy and Sergeant First Class McLarty. The organization then took the blankets to the Newark Fire Department at 191 Orange Street and unloaded the blankets with the help of the Newark Firefighters and Newark Police Officers.

?This has been a tough time for us all. Everyone in the state is hurting. But the National Guard is helping us come together,? said GI Go Fund Executive Director Jack Fanous. ?We have our neighbors working with us to get us through one of the darkest times in our state?s history. They were there for us when they volunteered to join the Guard; they were there for us when they deployed to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now they are here for us when we are in need. When people ask me where I?m from, it will forever give me great pride to say that I am from the state that is home to the New Jersey National Guard. We never leave anybody behind; we take care of our friends, our family, and our neighbors, and no storm will ever keep us down.?

In addition, the GI Go Fund, along with the staff of Senator Frank Lautenberg, took blankets to residents of Bayonne, NJ who turned the Midtown Community School at 550 Avenue A into an emergency shelter. The organization also brought gloves, hats, scarves, and carpackages donated by Operation Gratitude.

The New Jersey National Guard has been tremendous in providing assistance throughout the state, helping millions of residents in New Jersey get through this time of unspeakable tragedy. Every resident of New Jersey is eternally grateful for what they have done already, and what they will continue to do to help get this state back on its feet.

?The work that the men and women of our National Guard have accomplished is nothing short of miraculous,? said GI Go Fund Executive Director Jack Fanous. ?This has been the most dire situation in the state?s history. Significant loss of life, millions without power, incredible gas lines, and thousands of homes either damaged or completely destroyed. We are hurting, and in need of strong aid to get through the toughest of times. If Pranav Mistry has his way, people around the world can build their own wearable 'SixthSense' --which uses a camera that understands human gestures -- at a cost of less than Rs 15,000 ($300) by obtaining the software he developed for free in the next few months.

Mistry, a PhD student in Pattie Maes' Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT's Media Lab, is the genius behind SixthSense, a wearable device that enables new interactions between the real world and the world of data.

"I notice that it's hard to for these kind of things to market in some sense. . . because I don't want this to comply with some of kind of corporate policy," he told PTI in Mysore on Friday on the sidelines of TED conference being held in India for the first time.

"Rather than waiting for that time to come, I want people to make their own system. Why not?"

"People will be able to make their own hardware. I will give them instructions how to make it. And also provide them key software...give them basic key software layers. . . they will be able to build their own applications. They will be able to modify base level and do anything".

MIT Media Lab’s Pranab Mistry demonstrated the latest version of his Sixth-Sense wearable gesture interface at the TEDIndia conference

on Thursday, where he showed how it could be used to compute using just a piece of paper. Sixthsense was first presented by Mistry at a TED conference in February 2009.

In his latest demo, he attached a microphone to the paper and was able to use it as a touch interface, play 3D games, watch movies, and seamlessly transition work between a PC and his interface.

The demo received a huge round of applause from the audience at TED, but he saved the best for last.”I am trying to make this tech available to people, and I will provide all the open source software for Sixth sense starting next month.” said Pranav Mistry when talking to the host Chris Anderson.

Easy way to Set up ADB and Fastboot on a Mac

Ok, so I'm going to make a little write up on how to easily install ADB and fastboot on a Mac. It's actually quite simple, and plus you don't have to worry about drivers like in Windows.


Instructions

First, make a folder named "android" (no quotes of course ) You can place it anywhere on your hard drive, it doesn't really matter. Put it somewhere you'll easily remember, because you're going to be using it a LOT. I placed mine on my desktop.


Next, you'll want to download the android SDK from Here. (you won't need to install Java first like you would on a Windows PC, though I would recommend it anyway)


When the SDK finishes downloading, Unzip it and the contents of the "android-sdk-mac_x86" folder into your android folder.

Once you have done that, open your android folder. Go into the tools folder inside of it. Double click on the file called "android" (possibly called android sdk) This file is a UNIX executable and will open within a Terminal window.


When it finishes opening, check the folder called tools. Make sure both "Android SDK Tools" and "Android SDK Platform-tools" are selected within the tools folder. Click install and wait for them to download.


When they finish downloading, go into the platform-tools folder inside your android folder, then copy adb and fastboot and paste them into the root of your android folder.


Now that you have adb and fastboot installed, we're going to want to test them to make sure they work.

Go ahead and plug in your android device at this time. Make sure android debugging is enabled in settings. Go into Settings > Apps > Developer and check it there (for Gingerbread 2.3 and lower) or go into Settings > Developer Options and check it there for Ice Cream Sandwich or Jellybean. As of now, there are two ways to access adb and fastboot.

Open a Terminal window (look in Applications > Utilities if you can't find it). Type "cd" followed by the path you saved your android folder to (I'm going to use the Desktop for this demonstration) it should look like this Code:

cd /Users/<yourusername>/Desktop/android

Press enter.


Now you need to actually execute an adb or fastboot command. To do this, you'll need to type "./adb (or fastboot) <command>" For this tutorial, we will use "ADB devices" since it doesn't actually do anything to the phone. (we won't use fastboot since it requires rebooting to the boot loader which is different for every device)

In the same terminal window as before type the following:

./adb devices

then hit enter. It should turn up your device's serial number. If it does, proceed to the next step, if not recheck your steps, then leave a post in this thread.


(if it says * daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully * that is perfectly normal)

Now, at this moment, ADB and Fastboot are both completely useable. However, it's very annoying to have to CD into the directory and use ./ in front of every terminal command. I'll show you how to add it to your path so you don't have to do any of that.

Open a new Terminal window and type

nano ~/.bash_profile

it will open a window that looks like this:

(Yours will probably be blank, because I've added a lot of stuff to mine over the years)

Add a line to it that contains the path to your android folder. (again, I'm using Desktop) It should look like this

export PATH=${PATH}:/Users/<yourusername>/Desktop/android

Once you have added that, press CTRL+X to exit, then Y to confirm the save then press enter. It will close the nano editor. You can close the Terminal window now.

Now we need to verify that it works. Open a new Terminal window and type

If it shows the serial number, then you have set it up successfully and are good to go!
